Several varieties of leaf lettuce are attractive; all are easy from seed.
Sow tomatoes in December or early January.
Many succulents with unusual leaf shapes are suitable for life on a porch or windowsill.
Warm-season flowers grown easily from seed include cleome, yellow/orange cosmos, sunflowers, torenias and zinnias.

Keep the conical shape when you snip the fragrant foliage to use in cooking and potpourri.
Use the leaves in sauces, soups, stews, wreaths and potpourri.

Datura easy to grow and propagate Datura easy to grow and propagate
Tops can freeze back, but new shoots emerge from roots in spring.
Datura is poisonous, and handling seed pods causes a reaction in some people.
Let a pod remain on the plant until it's about to pop, then pull it, crack the pod and place the seeds in a saucer overnight to dry.
Store the seeds in a jar in the refrigerator for at least a week.
(They will remain viable, at 40 degrees, for about two years.) Plant the seeds about a half-inch deep in good potting soil.
If you keep datura potted, make sure it's in a container that's at least 5 gallons; it has a vigorous root system.
Crested or cockscomb has wrinkled, velvety, wide crests that resemble brightly colored brains or narrow crests like a rooster's comb.
